ROCKY MOUNT, Ala. — Rocky Mount Community Hospital and six-hundred-and-twelve residents are allegedly being asked to leave their homes because of a sewage backup.
Mayor Fred Tatum says after heavy rain Saturday and Sunday on the Appalachian Trail that normally runs through town, a sewer backup occurred at a home.
“It’s not really a big problem but, what they’re doing is, they’re closing off the main feed, the line coming into the property line on their back side,” Tatum says.
Tatum says the hospital had the pumps in their system turned off to avoid any potential contamination of the water.
“It will contaminate their well system and, I don’t think they want that,” Tatum says.
Tatum says the only residents affected are those who have wells to draw their drinking water.
“We’re going to take care of the residents that are affected immediately but, the larger concern is those of us who drink from that well and the households that are farther off the town. That’s why you’re hearing them close off the system,” Tatum says.
Tatum says the problem is still being cleaned up and the hospital and the affected residents will be told when the system will be back in place.
“We don’t want anyone to go without water, but the biggest thing is what they’re doing with the other well system, that’s the residents that are farther away,” Tatum says. “One of the bigger issues we have going on in our town is the water shortage.”
The mayor says it’s hard to tell how much water the residents at the other end of town are going to be affected by.
