I like the challenge of having new tools, functions, and ways to manipulate images. With Lightroom 5.2, a new capability in the Adobe products is the “Include Photoshop files” option in the “Navigator panel” in the “Developer” mode. It is not new, but this update of Lightroom makes it easier to handle PS files. Let’s go through the new features and see whether they can lure more photographers and their non-photographer friends into Lightroom.
Many new features in the latest update of Lightroom 5 for Photoshop are related to the way the regular version works and the new ToneBridge , the tool that will become part of the main Lightroom app but only for the version of Photoshop that can use Lightroom to apply its RAW editing techniques. Some of this is a refinement of the new features of Lightroom 5 for the iPad. Let’s go through them one by one:
The “Make a Catalog” function is gone (it was in LR4). However, you can now select newly imported files into the Lightroom catalog, while dragging them to a new folder on the desktop. Select to Include the PSD files,
and Photoshop will open them in the new folder wherever chosen. This works fine. However, if you select the folder on the desktop itself, the PSD files are included in the Lightroom project catalog for each shot. Generally I do not want that as I see them only once in a window. But this function will help you manage images more efficiently if the shots you selected are the ones you want included in your project.
When it comes to RAM, again, if you are able to buy more than do so. RAM is what allows your computer to handle multiple tasks at once. When working as a designer or digital artist, using multiple Adobe applications at the same time can become a very normal practice. Adobe applications can be very taxing on any computer and more RAM helps to complete those tasks quickly. Having more RAM connected to your processor will ensure you have a highly optimized powerhouse computer to handle any and all Photoshop tasks. Ever since I was able to afford my own computer, I never purchased a computer with less than 16GB of RAM. Most computers nowadays come with at least 8GB of RAM which is sufficient. The one nice thing about RAM unlike a processor is that you can replace the RAM and add more after purchasing it. However, make sure to check this as again, companies like Apple have made it impossible to replace the RAM in their computers. It is always worth double checking!
The outlook of the shape layers in Photoshop may be limited, but the capabilities of the feature go a step further than what we assume about it. I’ve been using Photoshop since version 2.5. I probably still remember when I was assigned a Mac, as the only computer I had ever used was an Apple IIe. It was the tool that made all those DOS editors like Dreamweaver go away—Flash is just another type of Photoshop, with a different file format.
I’ve traveled and worked in Adobe’s offices for years now. I’ve seen how the collective creativity of the team has shaped their product and transformed the face of the industry. And I’ve even been fortunate enough to chat with a few of the designers there—including members of the founding team. It’s because of them that I like to think I can contribute in small ways at Adobe. But that’s not to say I have all the answers. (C’mon, how many gurus can you say that about?
